Cups to Grams Converter

Convert US recipe cups to grams, or grams to cups, using weights for each ingredient

Estimates for US recipe cups. These weights are not for Japanese 200 mL cups or metric 250 mL cups.

Ingredient
Conversion

Try 1.5, 1/3, or 1 1/2. Fractions and mixed numbers are welcome.

Brand, texture, and how tightly you fill a cup can change its weight. If your recipe gives grams, use those weights first.

What this tool does

Turn the cup measurements in a US baking recipe into weights you can measure on a kitchen scale. Select flour, sugar, butter, or another listed ingredient to use its own weight per cup, then convert in either direction. Fraction inputs such as 1/3 and mixed numbers such as 1 1/2 work directly, so there is no need to round them to decimals first.

Common use cases

  • Bake a US recipe using a kitchen scale
  • Find how many recipe cups you have from a known weight
  • Compare the weights of flour and sugar measured in the same cup

How to use it

  1. Select your ingredient and choose cups to grams or grams to cups.
  2. Enter a decimal, fraction, or mixed number for the amount.
  3. Select Convert and check the estimate against the ingredient conversion chart.

Input and output example

Input: All-purpose flour, cups to grams, 1 1/2 cups
Output: At an estimated 120 g per cup, 1.5 × 120 gives approximately 180 g.

Important notes

  • These estimates apply to US recipe cups, not Japanese 200 mL or metric 250 mL cups.
  • The ingredient brand, particle size, and packing affect the result. Prefer a recipe’s own gram measurements when available.
  • Convert 0–1,000 cups or 0–1,000,000 grams. Decimal inputs support up to six decimal places.
  • Brown sugar is packed and powdered sugar is unsifted. Some reference half-cup weights are scaled up, so rounding can differ from other charts.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in one cup?
It depends on the ingredient. Here, one cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, while granulated sugar is about 198 g. A cup measures volume and a gram measures mass, so one universal factor cannot work.
Can I enter a third of a cup or mixed numbers?
Yes. Use 1/3 for a third of a cup or 1 1/2 for one and a half cups, with a space between the whole number and the fraction.
