Pages to print or save

Choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog. Use portrait A4 at 100% as a starting point, and check margins and page count.

The HTML file opens offline in a browser. Select Puzzle only before saving a file to distribute to students.

Filler letters can form extra words by chance. The answer key marks the generated placements. Check your puzzle before distributing it.

Your list is processed in your browser. Nothing is autosaved, so save the worksheet you want to keep.

What this tool does

Build a free printable word search around the vocabulary you actually teach. Paste your own word list, choose a grid size and a reading-direction difficulty, and create a puzzle with every accepted word included. The answer key shows both highlighted cells and start-to-finish coordinates. Save a puzzle-only handout for students and a separate key for yourself, or keep both pages together in an offline HTML file.

Common use cases

  • Create a vocabulary review handout for an ESL or elementary classroom
  • Make a themed activity for a birthday party, club, or family game night
  • Prepare separate student worksheets and teacher answer keys for offline use

How to use it

  1. Enter a worksheet title and paste words separated by new lines or commas.
  2. Choose the grid size and difficulty, then select Create puzzle. Use New arrangement for a different grid.
  3. Switch between Puzzle and Answer key to check the word bank and solution positions.
  4. Choose Puzzle only, Answer key only, or both pages, then print, save as PDF, or download the standalone HTML.

Input and output example

Input: PENCIL, PAPER, BOOK, DESK, CHAIR, RULER; 12 × 12 grid; Medium difficulty; seed 42.
Output: A 12 × 12 puzzle contains all six words, reading across or down. The answer key highlights their cells and lists start and end coordinates. Puzzle only produces a student handout without the answer page.

Important notes

  • Use A–Z letters only. Lowercase is converted to uppercase. Phrases with spaces, accented letters, numbers, and non-Latin scripts are not supported.
  • Each word must be 2–20 letters, with at most 30 different words and 2,000 total input characters. The longest word must fit the selected grid width.
  • If all words cannot fit, no partial puzzle is returned. Try a larger grid, fewer words, a different difficulty, or a new arrangement.
  • Random filler can form incidental words. The key identifies the generated placements; review the puzzle before handing it out.
  • PDF export uses your browser’s print dialog. Start with portrait A4 and check the page count and margins. Your input is not autosaved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print a word search without the answers?
Yes. Choose Puzzle only (for students) in Pages to print or save. That output includes the word bank and puzzle grid but no answer page or solution coordinates. Save the answer key separately for the teacher.
How do I recreate the same puzzle later?
Use the same word list in the same order, grid size, difficulty, and seed. To preserve the exact worksheet for future printing, save the generated HTML or PDF.
Does the saved HTML work offline?
Yes. It contains the selected puzzle and answer pages, requires no external images, scripts, or fonts, and can be opened and printed in a browser without an internet connection.
