Chord Transposer & Capo Calculator

Change a progression to suit your voice and make a practice chart

Transposing changes the pitch of the song. A capo changes the shapes while keeping that target pitch. A C shape with capo 2 sounds as D.

Separate chords with spaces, newlines or bar lines. Try Cmaj7 | G/B Am7 Fadd9. Enter chords only, without lyrics.

Transpose by semitones
Capo fret
Note spelling

Transposes standard chord symbols. It does not provide finger diagrams or alternate tuning instructions. Notes use your chosen sharps or flats rather than key-aware enharmonic spelling.

What this tool does

Move a chord progression into a comfortable vocal range and calculate the guitar shapes for a chosen capo position. Sounding chords and chord shapes are displayed separately, so other musicians can follow the same song. Save the chart as text or print it for your next practice.

Common use cases

  • Change a song to suit your vocal range
  • Use a capo to play a key with simpler shapes
  • Share sounding chords and guitar shapes with a band

How to use it

  1. Enter original sounding chords separated by spaces, newlines or bar lines. Remove lyrics and headings.
  2. Choose the semitone shift, output capo fret and sharp or flat spelling.
  3. Make the chart, check both outputs, and copy, save or print it for practice.

Input and output example

Input: D A Bm G / transpose 0 / capo 2
Output: Sounding chords: D A Bm G. Chord shapes: C G Am F.

Important notes

  • Enter chord symbols only, such as Cmaj7, Am7b5, Gsus4, G7(b9) or C/E.
  • The capo setting applies to the output guitar shapes. If the input already shows capo shapes, first convert them to sounding chords.
  • Note spelling uses your selected sharps or flats. Key-aware enharmonic spelling and finger diagrams are not provided.
  • Everything runs in your browser; the chart is not stored or uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How does transposing differ from using a capo?
Transposing changes the sounding pitch. The capo setting calculates shapes that produce that pitch. A C shape at capo 2 sounds as D.
Does it support slash chords and bar lines?
Both the root and bass note of a chord such as C/E are transposed. Bar lines, newlines, N.C., NC and % are preserved.
