What this tool does

Work out a restaurant tip and a fair bill split using the subtotal and tax shown on your receipt. Choose whether the tip applies before or after tax, enter your preferred percentage, and see the tip, total, and exact amounts each person pays. All calculations stay in your browser and work without an account.

Common use cases

  • Work out a restaurant tip while traveling
  • Split a dinner bill including tax and tip
  • Compare a tip on the subtotal with a tip on the taxed amount

How to use it

  1. Enter the subtotal before tax and tip, then the tax amount if any.
  2. Choose a tip percentage, number of people, and whether to include tax in the tip base.
  3. Select Calculate to see the total and the exact split, including leftover cents.

Input and output example

Input: Subtotal $100, tax $8.25, tip 18%, 3 people, tip before tax
Output: Tip $18.00; total $126.25. One person pays $42.09 and two people pay $42.08.

Important notes

  • Subtotal and tax each accept 0–1,000,000 with up to two decimal places. The tip accepts 0–100%; the group can have 1–100 people.
  • The tip is rounded once to the nearest cent, with half cents rounded up. Remaining split cents are assigned one per person.
  • USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, and AUD change the display only. No currency exchange or automatic tax lookup is performed.
  • Check whether your receipt already includes a service charge or gratuity before choosing an additional tip.

Frequently asked questions

Do I calculate the tip before or after tax?
The default uses the pre-tax subtotal. Turn on the include-tax option to use subtotal plus tax. Select the basis that fits your preference and local practice.
How are leftover cents handled when splitting?
For a $10.00 total split three ways, one person pays $3.34 and two pay $3.33. The displayed shares always add up to the original total.
